Mandurah (28/11/23)

We first visited the information ceneter to get informtion on the giants. Then we went to Little Lui (the first giant). Little Lui was made from a tree stump that had been uprooted and turned on it’s side. They use the roots as Little Lui’s back and hair. The Mandurah giants are only in Mandurah for a set time before moving on. They are made by Thomas Dambo. The next giant was called Santi ikto. It was located on a sand dune facing out towards the beach with his hands in the air. Dad had a photo with his hands in the air to copy the pose Santi was in. After Santi Ikto, we went to look at the next giant called Seba. Seba was facing out to the water so you could not see him very well. We still got an amazing look at him. Seba reminded me of the BFG with his horn, but was missing the suitcase of dreams. Next we went to Yaburgurt Winjan Cirkelstone. He was lying on the ground with rocks near him. It was connected to an Aboriginal story about an elder who ate too many crabs. The last giant we visited was the hidden giant. The lost giant was sitting on the ground hugging a tree. He was my favourite giant out of all of them because he looked so cute.

Isaac, it would have been so fascinating to hear how they used the tree and then to see the actual giant they created! Care was certainly taken to get the tree roots out so that they could be used as the hair! The sculptures are remarkable and would have taken a great deal of time to create. Very clever people did them. Do you know if they were done by a team of people or just one person? Love Aunty Kate. Xx
